“Sometimes you have to get off track to discover a better track.”  #RobinSharma #ArtisanCoffeeHQ

Hey guys, What’s up?

Just had my Artisan Coffee flat white while talking to Alan about coffee, practice, giving back and other general points of life; which got the brain turning a little and got me thinking about today’s QOTD, got me looking back at the detours over the last few years, when life went Off Track.

How life isn’t always smooth sailing and that the ideal route isn’t the only route.

20140225-150442.jpg
“Sometimes you have to get off track to discover a better track.” -Robin Sharma-

I can definitely say, with much confidence, that leaving MUWCI (UWCMC) in 2010 and then having to take an Intermission from Monash Malaysia in 2012 counts as going off track.

Were these detours off track (amongst others) truly leading me to discover a better track?

At this present moment in life I’m going to say yes, although each time felt like a win for Fibro and pushed me to feeling like a failure, especially in 2012….

Anyway, with failure always comes the option to either give in or fight. And so I picked myself up each time, though not necessarily immediately, and Kept Moving Forward.

This lead to learning, growing and maturing much along the way; in mind, body and soul (as corny as it sounds).

Priorities changed and I discovered more about myself.

This is nowhere near what the ‘me’ 7 years ago would’ve envisioned.

So, is this the better track?

I’ll never really know the answer but i’m going to say Yes:

Yes because I’m happy now because of who I am and not what i have.

Yes because the person I was then was a whole lot more Materialistic, Egoistic, Judgemental and Superficial and only would’ve gotten worse if i never fell.

Yes because the last few years have helped me develop and discover my passions, things that I might not have had time if things had gone the other way.

Yes because only through the recent hurdles and challenges did I learn what was truly important to me. (after being brainwashed and saturated by the images of the media driven, American Dream-esk, mainstream visions of a happy and successful life)

In a nutshell, I’m happy with the person I have grown into today but know that I can improve and develop more, but at my own pace and by my own benchmarks.

Now the question is, was this path meant to be or did I just make best with the hand that life dealt me? 😉

Coffee & I: A Story of Escape, Recovery & Love… of sorts.

20140215-211451.jpg

What’s up guys 🙂
I’m back at Artisan with a flat white next to me, or what’s left of a flat white, thinking about coffee…

Coffee, a strange thing to get excited or be fussy about i know, but i love it. I love the aroma that hits me as I walk into a coffee shop, the whiff of freshly grounded beans with their hints of dark chocolate, the taste of a good cup as it lingers on the tongue, the Zen I feel as I think & write at some of my favs and of course, the alertness that presents itself later in mid writing or conversation.

Coffee is a relatively big deal to me, others love their food and perfectly poached eggs, or their ice-cold beers straight out of the tap or out of the ice box, others their favourite whisky on the rocks or neat or their glass of red wine as it swirls around, gently caressing the wine glass before taking a sip.
I love my coffee, not the 3-in-1 stuff, not the instant stuff, the freshly ground, non-economies of scale roasted Papa Palheta/Coffee Societe/ Artisan Coffee/ Podgy and the Banker stuff.
20130406-231352.jpg
I’m not an expert or barista or anything like that, yet :p, I’m just someone who started out with freeloading off Starbucks Monash’s ambience with my green tea in my nice green Starbucks Thermos, that is until I met their Cafe Mocha and thus began my love affair with coffee, March 2012. This relationship went on strong for a while, almost a year i think, until I, erm, had an affair with Artisan Coffee BV2 which lead to my breakup with Starbucks, and for a while I was playing the field, going to different places for coffee and blogging but could never find the right one, either the coffee was good but not conducive for my writing or vice versa, until I bumped into Coffea Coffee Bangsar. I found myself at Coffea almost everyday, things were good for half a year until a friend introduced me to the newly open Artisan Coffee HQ; great coffee, 6 minutes from home, lots of natural light, comfy and free parking right smack in front… 20130815-154021.jpgSince then Artisan Coffee HQ became my regular place, I am comfy there, most of the people behind the counter know me, they stick my little yellow notes behind the counter, always make me feel welcomed and the coffee is good, there are days where it isn’t good and they fix it, and then there are days where it’s great, like today, great, a perfectly balanced flat white.  It’s been a good 7 months since and though I do try out other places (which greatly accelerated over the last 3 months as my Instagram account & Arkay’s QOTDs will testify show haha; i started trying other places around PJ, #CoffeeCulturePJ, & KL, #CoffeeCultureKL, checked out as many places as i could when I visited family in Penang, #CoffeeCulturePG, and Singapore, #CoffeeCultureSG, oh and even when i was in London, #CoffeeCultureUK) no one place has the whole package, Coffee, Comfort, Character & Compatibility, as I feel Artisan Coffee HQ has, and is still my regular place, as my yellow notes on the wall will show 🙂
“…coming to my favourite coffee place to enjoy a good coffee with appropriate music in solitude is when i run maintenance on myself and clear out some of the mess within so that i don’t reach a Level 10 meltdown. I’ve realized that my major Meltdowns come during periods where i don’t do any writing = i haven’t been spending time alone. I find that with my regular QuietTimes, i’m doing less frantic running around to put out fires and get more things done because my head is much clearer in comparison to other times without “maintenance”.
Coffee and the establishments that supplied it to me have played a significant role in my life over the last 2 years, they’ve played a part in my recovery.
Seriously.
Coffea Coffee, Artisan Coffee HQ and also Flat White SS 15 provided my a place to run away from the noise and mess of the world and be at peace, an environment that somehow quieten my mind and helped me focus, think and write…. and without my writing I probably wouldn’t have made half the progress that I’ve made. That’s how it all started, I was just looking for a place to runaway to and it’s grown into this love and appreciation.

I guess i just want people to understand that coming to Artisan or Flat White (or Coffea) isn’t just about the coffee, the coffee is great, but more importantly, it’s a place in which i’m protected and sheltered from the outside world

The world is a messy place, and even more of a mess when you have Fibromyalgia. Constant pain, sensitive nerves (to stimuli like lights and sounds too) and almost always so tired… combined that with a brain that doesn’t work as efficiently as it should and i’ve got a situation in which i’m unable to process all these details appropriately so it all just ends up as a mess in my mind.

So it gets very very difficult to have to deal with the normal suff in life…. the regular things like academic pressures, getting stuff done traffic and especially dealing with people… i.e. family and friends. (I love them to bits but sometimes it gets very hard for me to deal with the mess that comes naturally)”

Here I am, 2 years later sitting at Artisan Coffee HQ, sipping a perfectly balanced flat white in an environment that allows me to feel somewhat Zen, away from the noise of the world, a home away from home.
So, aside from being part of the recovery cocktail that’s got me this far, the question now is… has coffee become a passion of mine?

Yes. I’m pretty sure haha.
I see myself learning the art of The Barista and doing it part time; I see myself writing more about coffee, be it reviews, general thoughts & the progress of my coffee education; and even, hopefully, eventually, see myself owning & running my own place, a place just for coffee & cake filled with regulars illuminated in natural lighting amongst the beautiful buzz of great conversation conceiving great ideas and thoughts over lattes, brewed coffees and juices with a little stack of random Arkay’s QOTDs on each table, sort of like a fortune cookie but instead of a fortune they’ll get one of my favourite quotes that will hopefully spark the great conversations. Hahaha, yes, i’ve thought about this quite bit 🙂 I’m not sure about it or anything, it’s just something i’ve been playing around with in my head for a while.
There’s a long way to go if I want that to happen, I’m going to need to learn more, practice, try more and experiment, I’m going to write about it all. The different shops and coffees on my coffee trail, my trial and errors at brewing & barista-ing, the ups and downs on this specific journey.
I guess only after all of the above will I be able to tell if I truly have this passion for coffee or whether it’s just a casual fancy. Time, and effort, will tell.
Keep Moving Forward #KMF

Oh, One More Thing…
That’s the thing about coffee places, it’s a place you can be alone but not really feel alone. It’s a sort of mid point, away from people that you are always with which explains how one feels alone but surrounded by strangers that cause a little background buzz, a sort of background connection to humanity that brings about the feeling that you’re not alone. Essentially the difference being that you’re alone on a conscious level, a level where you’re alone with your thought and the other being you’re not alone on a subconscious level, where you are aware that there are people around you but you don’t think about it, it’s all just background processes that don’t matter at the moment, just background music if you will. Just comforting background music because, I think, even when we want to be alone, we don’t really want to be completely alone in silence. Why? Because we feel disconnected from humanity, and most would rather not have that. Especially now, in an age of extreme connectivity. “

My Living Work of Art, January 2014 in Review.

20140202-152219.jpg

Hey guys, it’s been while. A very long while.

Last time we caught up, unless you’re following me on Instagram, I was in London at this little coffee place called The Borough Barista if i remember correctly. Anyway a lot has happened since then and i thought i was only right that i get back to writing at the start of my year, the year of the Horse 🙂
This piece isn’t going to be a very thoughtful post, not yet, just a look back at the last two months, mostly January as the title implies haha.  So December and January were both full fledged holiday months, no work, no stress, just travelling, family & fun… oh, and some reading haha. The first 24 days of my holiday was all about London (featuring Manchester) and it was amazing, the best holiday i’ve ever had, but more on that another time, today is about January and how things played out for the first month of 2014.
The theme for January was very simple, Family. There was a lot family fun & bonding from #ItsAVeryJessyXmas to #AnotherJessyWedding, #SimrensGettingMaried, to my 10 day #ArkayInPenang trip. The start of the month was very fast paced with the wedding, a lot of dancing, a lot of drinking and a helluva lot of fun, Nav & I even joined the girls on stage this time around to perform for Sim’s wedding, and that was brilliant. It’s amazing what a few beers before dancing can do to help one loosen up, especially when one has to represent the family at the groom side reception at a “Dance Off” 😉
  • There was a lot of suiting up and looking good,
  • There was a lot of beer,
  • There was a lot of family,
  • There was a helluva lot of dancing, including our One Two Three Four performance on stage and the “Dance Off”,
  • There was a lot of laughter, fun and singing, almost all hindi/punjabi based. At one point the younger ones in the family decided to takeover by breaking into a very out of tune Bohemian Rhapsody!
  • There was a lot of Coffee, i managed to do a little Coffee Exploring in Penang and found some great places! 🙂
  • There was NYs at the Stratosphere,
  • There was a lot of amazing food, I finally tried #nasiKandarTelekom!
  • I drove to Penang for the first time,
  • I recently got back to running,
  • We made another ElmoDog video ;p
  • I finally finished Feast for Crows and Dance of Dragons!
  • I had a great, chilled out, 10 days with Nav & Rash (Nav & I decided it was way too long since out last Red Alert game)
  • Did i already mentioned there was, as usual, a lot of coffee? hahaha
  • We failed to Break The Code in time,
  • We are now getting into this Game of Thrones Card game,
  • Oh, and there was this amazing night of performance at China House! Say It Like You Mean It, #SILYMI, i think the next one is happening on the 21st weekend or something, be sure to check it out cause i had a great time in awe of all the talent.
So yea, January was a very family month and it was great!
But now it’s time to Move Forward and get back to my Systems, especially back to my running and nutritions systems.
Time of get back to writing, i’ve taken a long enough hiatus and i’ve missed this.
Time of take the next step with regard to my love for coffee and my future plans.
For the next 60 days (till i get back to uni), my #1 priority is going to be to take my fitness to the next level, followed by getting back to writing and coffee. Anyway, I’ve made great progress over the last 6 months, moving from 2KM, 12 minute treadmill runs to my peak of 10KM in 50 minutes to my current 6KM in 30 minutes, and all-in-all losing 10KG but more importantly, feeling healthier than I’ve ever felt, especially since Fibro.
As John W. Gardner said, “Life is the art of drawing without an eraser” and I like what i’ve drawn up for January with all it’s mistakes, highlights & colour. I look forward to coming back here to #ArtisanCoffeeHQ in a month to review and admire my February drawing. 🙂  I expect to see more prominent fitness, health, writing & coffee accents, colours and shapes.
My next piece will be less summary and more thoughtful. 😉
Till then,
Keep Moving Forward

What’s crack-a-lacking people?

If you follow me on Instagram you would know that i’m in London and am doing quite a bit of exploring and walking about. I’ve made my way to this cozy little coffee place on Charles II Street called The Borough Barista after a good 2 and a half hour walk from Waterloo over the Waterloo bridge, walked down the Victoria Embankment, back over the other side via another bridge to the Jubilee Gardens and then back across the Westminster Bridge to Big Ben and the Parliament Square, where i bumped into good old Winston Churchill and later on Abe Lincoln; they weren’t in a very talkative mood though, oh well.

Image“Well done is better than well said.” Benjamin #franklin. Landed safe and sound, enjoying a Mocha at costa while waiting for the cab. Slept through most of the flight, immigration took 5 minutes & my bags came out pretty quick, so all in all, pretty good flight. #Day1 #ArkayInTheUK

Anyway, i then continued walking, even though my feet were in all sorts of pain, and made my way to the beautiful St. James Park, unfortunately i couldn’t spend as much time as i would have liked due to my howling feet and very empty stomach, so i continued walking until I saw this little sign saying “British Coffee” and I just had to take a look 😉 (note, i essentially had no idea where I was walking, i just went with the flow).

Image“Your daily behaviour reveals your deepest beliefs.” Robin #Sharma. So after being confined to my sisters house for a little over 3 hours I’m finally getting to explore Kingston. After more than an hour of walking around #kingston i’ve made it to the #LocalHero = #coffeetime ️ Kingston is a beautiful little town and I’m really enjoying my walking about .#Day1 #arkayintheuk

So yea, one good ham sandwich and Piccolo later i’m sitting here with Ivy (my MacBook) out rambling on about how I spent a lot of time walking about London toda…. wait wait… circular-spirally-thought path alert.

ImageHaving my first beer in #London with my sis  #Day1 #hellolondon2013 #arkayintheuk

Anyway, it’s now Day 5 of my trip, #ArkayInTheUK, and i’m thoroughly enjoying myself, despite the cold, the 4:30pm sunsets and aching, aching feet. Kingston is my primary base and a lovely little town at that. Spent the first 3 days exploring and walking about; didn’t find any good coffee but i found plenty to see 🙂 I finally made me way out of Kingston and into London yesterday, and i was not disspointed at all with my day. Lunch with my uncle and aunt, where i was force fed a lot of rice and chicken curry ;), was followed up by a 2+ hour walk from Bethnal Green to Covent Garden, which hurt a helluva lot, but which i have no regrets about.

Image#day2. Chilling at the park in the cold, watching families play in the park, people walk their dogs, kids playing football on a nice pitch one side and watching two local teams battle it out on this side as the last of beautiful leafs fall. Sometimes I can’t belief I’m actually here and fear that it’s all a dream & I’ll wake up.  Thank you so much for this mum & dad. #day2 #arkayintheuk #hellolondon2013.

During my 2+ hour walk, that went through Holburn, I saw the transition from Old London to Central, which was amazing, it was like a journey through time. My favourite part so far of London has been the parks and the architecture, the old grand building that I only say in movies growing up, and the fact that i’m actually here, looking at them with my own eyes, takes me way back and i find myself feeling like a little kid in awe of this big city. It is something that I partially cannot believe, half expecting to wake up and find myself back at home in bed.

IMG_4339#Day3:”The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy of life lies in having no goals to reach.” -Benjamin #Mays– Just sitting at this cafe, #pickeldpantry, sipping my flat white & observing the street & the people. Kingston is a really beautiful town, especially now with the autumn leafs . I just love walking around, getting lost and then opening up Maps to get me home

This city is so old, so full of history and class, yet so vibrant and new at the same time.

IMG_4818A#Day4: I’m at a slight loss for words right now.. 3 floors of awesomeness apple stuff & more! So many third party things too!!! #london #coventgarden #hellolondon2013 #arkayintheuk #nofilter — at Apple Store.

I know it’s still early on in my trip, but I’m really really really loving it so far and am so excited because there’s still so much to do! So much that sometimes it feels a little overwhelming, but i guess that’s better than underwhelming, i’ve just got to plan it all out and i’ll be good :).

IMG_4851#Day4: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” #gandhi.
I am certainly enjoying myself in London. Walked from #BethnalGreen to #CoventGarden, a good 2 hour 6.7km walk. It was amazing to see the transition from old London to the City to Covent, and walking thru all the parks, taking in the architecture. Felt like a kid
Anyway, this pic was at 5pm at #coventgarden and I was thinking twice about having coffee because of how dark it was haha. Finally found a good latte. #day4  #london #arkayintheuk#hellolondon2013

I think i’ve rested up enough, going to get back on my feet, and like Johnnie, keep walking. Check out my instragam, @arkaysthoughts for more pics of my trip so far, and my walking paths.

Goals

So, my 11th day running at @artisancoffee 😬

“A goal without a plan is just wish.” – Anotine de Saint #Exupery

Anyway, the quote above is another one that hits close to home.

I used to make wishes, not have goals. Use to have dreams, without steps, that of course failed to materialized because I wished them to happen, I didn’t act to make them happen.

Now that I’ve taken my planning more seriously, now that I’ve built a better system, I see faster & better results than before.

Plans aren’t 100%, that’s true, but on the same note as yesterday, whenever a plan fails, I look to rebuild it taking into account the factors that lead to the failure, improving it and then trying again. And I’ll repeat it as necessary.

I’ve been building a new system over the last few months that has so far produced results with my health; the academic phase will kick in next march and my writing/blogging phase will kick off in either December or Jan. These systems provide structure for my plans which in turn help me reach my goals.

So yea, remember when shit happens and things fall apart, even when it’s no fault of your own, only you can decide whether you wanna remain stagnant or #KMF.

Keep Moving Forward
